Smiling

I made a promise to myself a long time ago that I would smile at least once a day. Not a smile-for-the-sake-of-smiling smile, or a cheesy-photo-opportunity smile... I mean a ten-million-watt smile. The kind of smile that reminds me to find the joy in life no matter how hard it tries to hide. It's not always easy but I'll be darned if it doesn't make the search that much sweeter.

There are times when I've lost that smile, when the darkness wrapped itself around my heart and threatened to pull me under to be lost in her murky depths. It's not easy to struggle back from the edge- it's painful, messy and bloody- but with each faltering step my stride becomes stronger. I walk for my little, the love he gives me is sugar for my soul. He loves so passionately, so completely... full of innocence and trust in the world. I know that one day his trust could be betrayed and that innocence lost but for now all is as it should be, free and uninhibited.

Sometimes my search takes me far and wide...

Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, adds to the joy and glory of the climb.
- Winston Churchill.
